The Oakland County Suicide Prevention Coalition (OCSPC) is a group of individuals and agencies that have joined together with the sole purpose of preventing suicides. Members include survivors of suicide, educators, physical and mental health professionals, judicial representatives, emergency responders, clergy, and other concerned community members. Preventing suicides is a major task that involves a number of strategies in the prevention, crisis intervention, and post-vention stages. The Oakland County Suicide Prevention Plan is our attempt to develop and implement strategies to address each of these stages. The plan is a fluid document that we expect to change from time to time to reflect needs of our community, best practices, and our capabilities as a coalition. Meetings of the OCSPC are held every two months. Anyone is welcome to attend these meetings. Typically they begin with a 20-60 minute presentation by a member or guest speaker regarding a specific area of interest to the group. If you are interested in attending, please contact us so we can let you know about any changes in location. Unfortunately, one of the biggest challenges the OCSPC faces in our efforts to prevent suicides is the absence of money to fund our efforts. It is a frightening reality that—at a time when Southeastern Michigan’s economy is devastated, and suicide risk has increased—less and less money is available to support our prevention efforts. If you are interested in contributing financially to our efforts, please contact us so we can tell you more about our programs and answer any questions you may have regarding your areas of interest.
