Suicide claims more than 32,000 lives in the United States each year. HIV/AIDS claims approximately 17,000 lives in the U.S. each year. Homicide claims approximately 18,000 lives in the U.S. each year
Suicide listed in the top 10 causes of death in nearly every age group in Michigan. (For 10-19 year-olds, suicide is the #2 cause of death.) (For 19-34 year-olds, suicide is the #3 cause of death.)
For every suicide there are an estimated 25 suicide attempts. In 2006, 136 people in Oakland County died by suicide. That means that 3,400 people in Oakland County attempted suicide in 2006.
Each suicide leaves an average of 6 survivors (people intimately affected by suicide). This means that 2006 produced an additional 816 survivors of suicide.
Based upon the 754,570 suicides in the U.S. from 1980 thru 2004, it is estimated that the number of American survivors of suicides is more than 4.5 million people, and growing rapidly every day.
Calculations reveal that the number of years of potential lost life of people under the age of 75 who died by suicide in Oakland County add up to 3,765 years of potential life lost.
Oakland County (2006) numbers compared with MI (2006) & USA (2004): # of Suicides: Oakland-136 Michigan-1,132 USA-32,439 Rates of Suicides Oakland-11.2 Michigan-11.2 USA-11 (per 100,000)
There a many other statistics available on suicide at the county, state, national, and international level. They are all equally as horrifying, and they all support the need for local, state, national, and international responses to this epidemic. The following plan is Oakland County’s attempt to begin addressing this problem on a local level.
