Project Members:

The goal of the surveillance systems project is to identify potential sources of data relating to suicide prevention, to work towards opening up channels to obtain that data, and review data for trends.

Examples:

· Contact emergency rooms for information (numbers, means, ages, zip codes, race/ethnic data, discharge direction, etc.) regarding suicide attempts.

· Contact health insurance providers for information on claims involving suicide attempts.

· Create a Suicide Death Review Team based upon the Child Death Review model.

· Review Medical Examiner data on suicides.

Current activities:

· OCSPC has accessed the Medical Examiner’s office

· OCSPC has become represented as part of the Oakland County Child Death Review Team

· OCSPC has been invited to extract data from ME’s files.

Future activities:

· Develop a database and a data collection tool

· Begin extracting data from Medical Examiner files

· Make contact with ER’s

· Make contact health insurance providers
